Service to the Community

An area where our (Slovenian) totalitarian past is still clearly present, is the field of civil society. Up to twenty years ago, any self-organization of our people was heavily discouraged or even outright prohibited. In recent days I've participated in several grassroots initiatives, where our lack of capability for self-organization without an outsider setting the rules was clearly evident. If we ever want to become a successful, democratic society participation in school boards, local government, professional associations, sport clubs, charities, environment protection initiatives, or in any other service to the community, should become a norm rather than an exception.
